The Aloha Spirit reminds us that no matter how things may not go our way, we should consider the other person and try to put ourselves in their place and understand from their perspective before committing to act or speak. We strive for Lokahi, Oneness, in our relations with each other and with Ka 'Aina, the land. This concept is so important to the Hawaiian people that the meaning of Aloha (which is a chant traditionally recited at the beginning of formal gatherings) was codified in the Constitution for the State of Hawai’i, the exact text of which is, as follows:
AKAHAI E NA HAWAI'I Kindness expressed with Tenderness
LOKAHI A KULIKE
Unity expressed with Harmony
'OLU 'OLU KA MANA'O
Pleasant remain your Thoughts
HA'AHA'A KOU KULANA
Humility expressed with Modesty
AHONUI A LANIKILA
Patience expressed through Perseverance
